Fingerpicking

Fingerpicking guitar is one of the most interesting and beautiful approaches to play music on the guitar.

Fingerpicking is used in all styles of music from classical to hardrock.

Most often the focus is on the fretting hand and I will admit I am guilty of this myself.

Today we will focus on the fingerpicking hand.

Fingerpicking can done with two, three, four or five fingers.

The Thumb generally works the bass notes. Usually the Low E string and A string.

Depending on how many other fingers are involved determines which strings will be played by the other fingers.

A good example would be playiing the Open E chord.

Normally you strum all the strings at the same time.

Finger picking will allow you to play a bass line and a melody without moving your fretting hand.

Here is a tab for a strummed chord:

E|--0--0--0--0--
B|--0--0--0--0--
G|--1--1--1--1--
D|--2--2--2--2--
A|--2--2--2--2--
E|--0--0--0--0--

Now when you are fingerpicking you play it like this:

E|--------------
B|-----0--------
G|-----1-----1--
D|-----------2--
A|--------2-----
E|--0-----------
----T--3--T--2--Fingers used
-------2--1-------
